IFFK Assignment - Sarvam Thaalamayam Review

Rajeev Menon who wears the director's hat after a long hiatus, presents a Rocky story with music as its backdrop.

Michael is a lighthearted college going youngster whose life revolves around his idol, Thalapathy Vijay. His parents strive hard each day to make ends meet and are concerned about whether he would turn up well in the future. Michael's aimless and easy going attitude gets him dejected when he tries to woo a girl he likes. Vembu Iyer, an elderly man of legendary status comes into the life of Michael, which makes him want to be like him. The rest of the film shows how a person becomes unstoppable once he identifies his passion.

G V Prakash fits in perfectly as Michael. His expertise in the field of music adds authenticity to the scenes where he has to perform. His looks and mannerisms are spot on as a  Chennai localite youngster even when the character grows mature. Nedumudi Venu as Vembu Iyer is the soul of the film. His performance is unparalleled and one of the best in his career. Vineeth impressively plays the egoistic villain role. He is depicted to be frustrated from not having achieved the respect and fame that he believes to deserve. Aparna Balamurali comes as the love interest of Michael. Her character has a lot of depth and ample screentime.

The film addresses the casteism existing in the society, but never exaggerates. It introduces both the two kinds of people belonging to the uppercaste, those who are biased by cast and those who treat everyone with equal respect. The cheap strategies employed on channel reality show floors are also depicted. Anyway, it seems to be more of a fictionalised account. There is some fan service propaganda at the beginning of the film, which also felt to be slightly overdone. The script structure being similar to sports genre films works big time to increase the engaging factor. Music composed by A R Rahman has the impact it intends, but only a few songs stay in the minds of the viewer.

Sarvam Thaalamayam is a delightful motivational tale coupled with some great acting.
